Bolivian education authorities have announced that classes will resume next week following the winter break, with a continued focus on remote learning in several municipalities due to persistent measles outbreaks. Viviana Mamani, Vice Minister of Special and Alternative Education, stated that a new evaluation is scheduled for next Wednesday to determine if a nationwide shift to in-person classes is feasible. According to Mamani, weekly assessments are conducted in conjunction with the intersectoral health committee to monitor epidemiological and climatological conditions. "We receive a general report from the Ministry of Health, which indicates ongoing outbreaks in some municipalities," she explained. These affected areas, including Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Cabezas, Cuatro Cañadas, and La Guardia in Santa Cruz, as well as El Alto and La Paz cities in La Paz, and Sacaba and Omereque in Cochabamba, will commence the academic period remotely. The Vice Minister underscored the highly contagious nature of measles, noting that one infected person can transmit the disease to up to 18 others. She urged parents to ensure their children, particularly those aged 1 to 14, are vaccinated. "They must attend health centers and vaccination campaigns to obtain their vaccination card," Mamani stressed. She added that this week is crucial for all municipalities planning to return to in-person classes, as authorities aim for a significant reduction in cases to allow for a full return to classrooms.
